Singapore and Brazil Sign Green Shipping Agreement to Advance Digital Maritime Transport and Decarbonisation
Singapore and Brazil have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish the Singapore-Brazil Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC), strengthening cooperation on green shipping, maritime decarbonisation, digitalisation, and sustainable international shipping. The MOU was signed by Singapore’s Minister for Transport, Mr Jeffrey Siow, and Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, Mr Tomé Franca.
The partnership is expected to support sustainable shipping, improve maritime efficiency, and strengthen collaboration between the two countries on green maritime technology and digital shipping solutions. The initiative will focus on advancing efforts to make international shipping more sustainable and efficient.
Brazil’s Renewable Energy Potential to Support Green Marine Fuels
Brazil has significant renewable energy resources and production capabilities that could support the production of zero- and near-zero greenhouse gas emission marine fuels. Singapore, meanwhile, is the world’s largest bunkering port and a leading global hub port with a vibrant innovation ecosystem.
The Green and Digital Shipping Corridor will bring together these complementary strengths to support the development of alternative marine fuel supply chains, potentially strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the transition toward cleaner maritime transport.
Singapore and Brazil to Explore Digital Information Exchange
Under the MOU, Singapore and Brazil will also explore digital information exchanges aimed at improving maritime and port operations. The two countries will work with industry to advance the research, development, and adoption of emerging maritime technologies and solutions.
The collaboration brings together Brazil’s renewable energy and production capabilities with Singapore’s position as a major global bunkering and hub port, creating a framework for cooperation on both maritime decarbonisation and digitalisation.
