UAE Oil Spill: Ras Al Khaimah Closes All Beaches

Authorities in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, have closed all beaches until further notice following an offshore oil spill, as neighbouring Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah also impose coastal restrictions. The closures come amid efforts to contain the leak and assess its impact on marine pollution, coastal safety and environmental protection.

The UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said containment efforts and environmental assessments were underway following an oil leak from a tanker offshore. The incident highlights the importance of oil spill response, maritime risk management and coastal environmental monitoring in protecting marine ecosystems and shoreline communities.

The Public Services Department announced the Ras Al Khaimah closures in a statement shared by Ras Al Khaimah Police General Headquarters on Saturday. Officials did not specify a reason for the decision.

In neighbouring Umm Al Quwain, all beaches and coastal areas were temporarily closed while technical teams assessed the situation and determined the necessary safety and marine protection measures. Authorities also urged fishermen and other sea users to avoid affected areas and follow official instructions.

Sharjah has separately closed Al Hamriyah Beach, on the UAE’s northern coast near the border with Umm Al Quwain, as a precaution, according to the Sharjah Government Media Bureau.

Residents reported unusual odours in parts of Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain. The UAE environment ministry said the odours posed no health risks, although the smell remained pungent across Umm Al Quwain on Friday.

Coastal Protection and Oil Spill Response

The closures underscore the role of environmental assessments and coordinated response operations in managing oil spill risks along busy maritime coastlines. Monitoring affected waters and shorelines helps authorities assess potential environmental impacts and determine appropriate protective measures.

Authorities have not publicly identified the tanker involved or disclosed the cause of the leak. The extent of the spill and its overall environmental impact have not been established in the information provided by officials.
