The KMP Batumandi departed Bakauheni, at the southern tip of Sumatra, at approximately 2:52 p.m. Shore-based staff spotted flames near the vessel’s stern roughly two hours later. The operator said the evacuation was completed within an hour. The incident highlights the importance of maritime safety, passenger protection, and effective emergency response in ferry operations.
