
Japan Forecasts Global Ship Demand Growth Toward 2050
Japan’s Maritime Safety Bureau under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has released the final summary of its “Ship Demand Forecast to Support Global Cargo Volume”, providing a long-term outlook on global maritime transport demand, future ship capacity requirements, and opportunities for the next generation of vessels.
The forecast examines future ship demand not only for conventional maritime cargo transportation but also for emerging energy and carbon-neutral shipping sectors, including hydrogen carriers, ammonia vessels, and CO₂ transport ships. The assessment aims to support the development of a stable global ship supply system, strengthen maritime economic security, and provide essential data for future investment decisions in the shipping and shipbuilding industries.
Maritime transport remains a critical pillar of global trade and economic development, with more than 99% of Japan’s trade volume dependent on sea transportation. As a nation surrounded by oceans and reliant on overseas sources for energy and food supplies, Japan considers a stable maritime supply chain and a resilient shipbuilding industry as key components of national economic security.
The report was developed by the Future Ship Demand Forecast Task Force, which includes experts from government agencies, the shipping sector, shipbuilding companies, and related maritime industries. The task force analyzed future transportation demand scenarios developed by international organizations up to 2050, estimating required vessel capacity and future shipbuilding demand needed to support global maritime cargo flows.
According to the forecast, the global shipping industry is expected to experience significant transformation driven by increasing demand for zero-emission vessels, green shipping technologies, and alternative fuel-powered ships. These developments are creating new opportunities for the shipbuilding sector, despite recent challenges caused by declining construction volumes and intensified international competition.
Japan’s shipbuilding industry, which has historically played an important role in global maritime transportation, is expected to use the forecast as a strategic reference for strengthening competitiveness, promoting innovation, and expanding participation in emerging markets such as decarbonized shipping, offshore energy transportation, and advanced maritime infrastructure development.
The final summary is expected to serve as an important foundation for policymakers, shipping companies, shipbuilders, and maritime investors when making medium- and long-term decisions related to shipbuilding capacity, maritime logistics planning, and global supply chain resilience.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism stated that it will continue examining future growth strategies for Japan’s shipbuilding industry based on the findings of the ship demand forecast, supporting sustainable development and competitiveness in the global maritime sector.
