River Cruise Ship Anna Katharina Suffers Damage after Collision at Danube Lock in Vienna
A river cruise vessel Anna Katharina sustained structural damage after colliding with a lock wall and gate at the Freudenau power plant on the Danube River in Vienna, Austria. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, July 24, resulted in injuries to 14 passengers and crew members while triggering a major emergency response involving firefighters, police and medical rescue teams.
The 135-metre river cruise ship, carrying around 200 passengers and crew, struck the Danube lock structure at approximately 4:30 a.m. while navigating through Vienna’s important inland waterway route. Although the vessel’s bow suffered significant damage from the impact, authorities confirmed that the hull remained intact and no water ingress or flooding was reported, allowing the ship to remain afloat.
According to emergency services, 14 people were injured in the Danube cruise ship accident. Six individuals were transported to hospitals with back, neck and chest injuries, while other passengers suffered minor injuries, including bruises caused by the force of the collision. Most of those injured were reported to be German nationals.
Emergency response teams from the Vienna Fire Department, police and ambulance services quickly arrived at the Freudenau lock facility by land and water. Rescue crews boarded the vessel and assisted injured passengers, with some evacuations carried out using a turntable ladder and a fireboat. Before emergency responders reached the scene, a German paramedic travelling as a passenger provided initial first aid to those affected.
Following the rescue operation and confirmation that all passengers and crew members were safe, the vessel operator arranged alternative transportation for passengers by transferring them to another river cruise ship so they could continue their scheduled journey along the European waterways.
Authorities have launched an official investigation into the river cruise vessel collision in Vienna, while a judicial inquiry is also underway. Investigators are examining whether a possible technical malfunction or operational issue contributed to the accident. The exact cause of the collision has not yet been determined.
The incident caused a significant emergency presence at the Freudenau lock, with multiple rescue vehicles and emergency vessels deployed around the Danube infrastructure. The Freudenau power plant lock is a key component of Austria’s Danube navigation network, supporting commercial and passenger vessel movement along one of Europe’s busiest inland waterways.
