Toamasina Port Welcomes Madagascar’s First STS Cranes
Madagascar has reached a significant milestone in its port modernization and maritime logistics development with the arrival of the country’s first-ever ship-to-shore (STS) gantry cranes at the Madagascar International Container Terminal (MICT) in the Port of Toamasina. The terminal has received two advanced ZPMC STS cranes, each featuring a 67.5-metre outreach, enabling operations across 24 container rows. The cranes will be deployed at ICTSI’s Madagascar International Container Terminal, representing the first installation of STS container cranes in the nation’s history. The new equipment will support operations at the terminal’s recently commissioned 333-metre C4 container quay, which entered service in March and offers a 16-metre water depth, allowing the facility to accommodate larger container vessels and enhance cargo handling efficiency.
The deployment of the new STS cranes is expected to significantly strengthen container terminal operations, improve port productivity, and increase the Port of Toamasina’s ability to handle growing regional and international container traffic. By expanding vessel handling capacity and supporting larger container ships, the investment reinforces Madagascar’s role in Indian Ocean maritime trade, global shipping networks, and African port infrastructure. Enhanced cargo handling capabilities are also expected to improve supply chain reliability, reduce vessel turnaround times, and support future growth in international trade and logistics.
